Kanye West Fans Aren't Seeing Eye To Eye On 'See Me Now'

Fan reaction to the MC's Beyoncé-featuring single ranges from 'wack' to ' 'Ye is back!!!!'
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Fans agree that Kanye West is back, but they can't seem to agree on how they feel about that. The MC unveiled his latest single, "See Me Now," on Wednesday, and since then, Kanye followers have being going back and forth about whether the track is on fire or a fail.

The song, which features soulful contributions from Beyoncé and Charlie Wilson, is expected to appear on his upcoming untitled album, but, for many, the song takes things back to the MC's debut, College Dropout.

"Wow, it reminds me of College Dropout. Good to hear 'Ye laugh!" Ezekiel wrote on West's Kanye UniverseCity blog.

Bryan C.G. agreed: "This totally feel like your Dropout days. I love it."

Some fans, such as Prolifik, are all about 'Ye reviving the strings-laden throwback soul that kicked off his recording career. "Amazing! Classic flow, classic beats," the fan wrote. "I miss that old College Dropout steez! Welcome back, 'Ye."

" 'Ye is back!!!!" Tiffany wrote. "Hip Hop needs you so much!! You're brilliant."

While lots of online commenters are feeling the song, some of the MC's fans aren't seeing the appeal of "See Me Now." "This song is hot garbage," Luis Ariza declared on West's Facebook page.

The Facebook post announcing the song scored more than 580 "likes" at press time, however, some fans were not on the "See Me Now" bandwagon. "[It's the] first song from Kanye that I have not liked," Ariza wrote.

"This song needs major work," Real Talk proclaimed on West's blog. "I want harder beats and to be able to move my feet." Chad Jones also chimed in on Facebook: "Not feelin it. Huge Kanye fan and love the evolution in his music but the track is wack. Lyrics are nice but track is wack."

" 'Ye is the man, but this song is WEAK!!!" Wallace Leeth wrote.

Jay Yey Couture thought the G.O.O.D. Music lyricist was upstaged by fellow superstar Beyoncé and undermined by the instrumental. "Kanye will sell this fall, that's for sure. However Beyoncé made this song!!!!!" the fan typed. "Kanye had too much time to come with ... this [weak] beat ... he could have did wayyyyy better."

Yeezy might not have won over all his fans with the single, but he does have the opportunity to redeem himself on the awards-show stage: West will perform at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which air live September 12 at 9 p.m. The appearance marks his VMA return after a notorious onstage dustup with Taylor Swift, but it appears the rapper is taking the incident in stride. West closes "See Me Now" with the ad lib, "Uncle Charlie, by the way. And I'mma let you finish, but I got Beyoncé on the track."

What do you think of "See Me Now"? Let us know in the comments below!

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12.

Usher Opens Up About Marriage To Tameka Foster

'It just was never going to work out 100 percent,' the singer says.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Usher's personal life — or public speculation about what has happened behind closed doors — has often figured prominently in the singer's work. Fans ate up the 2004 Confessions LP, which dropped amid rumors that Usher had stepped out on ex-girlfriend Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Similarly, the singer had endured whispers about his reportedly rocky marriage to stylist Tameka Foster before his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, debuted at #1 this year.

On the heels of the release of Versus, an extension of Raymond, the R&B crooner opened up about why he wasn't able to make it work with Foster.

"We're two different people and we have two different goals," Usher told People. "It just was never going to work out 100 percent."

Just like he did with his monster album Confessions, the ATL singer turned the heartbreak into hits. "My music is about where I am at the time," Usher explained. "In Raymond v. Raymond, I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and I was suddenly a single father."

Continuing his tradition of mining his personal life for inspiration, Usher said that Versus is "about being a dating father."

Earlier this year, the buzz surrounding his relationship with Foster ramped up when Usher's track "Papers," a song about ending a marriage by signing off on divorce documents, hit airwaves. However, Usher told MTV News in March that while the track wasn't inspired by a real-life situation, it unfortunately became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

"When the song was recorded, I wasn't divorced," Usher said. "It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at six in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn't know how realistic it would become. I didn't know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that's like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality."

What do you think of Usher's explanation for the end of his marriage to Tameka Foster? Let us know in the comments below!

US Open

I went to the US Open yesterday. It was quite an experience and something I'll never forget. It's like a bucket list thing, you know? And I got to watch both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer play, two of the best players ever.

I took tennis lessons as a kid and then again in college, but I'm not a player. But I knew enough to follow along and the matches were really great. Plus, my friend Lacy and I made the jumbotron! Woot woot!

IMG_1020

The US Open takes place in the Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which is a complex consisting of a bunch of smaller courts, two midsize ones, and one big one (which is the Arthur Ashe Stadium.) It looks like this:

So while the Men's Singles Semi-Finals were going on in the Arthur Ashe Stadium (which is what I got to see), junior matches were being played on some of the smaller courts.

Of the two matches I saw, Nadal won and Federer lost. I was a little bummed out by that because I like Federer, but the guy who beat him, Novak Djokovic from Serbia, was so excited and it's always nice to see an underdog win. Here he is right after he won yesterday:

And here's a photo of him hitting himself in the head yesterday after losing the third round.

Tennis can be pretty brutal. But anyway, it's really cool because the whole stadium gets really quiet when they play. You can hear their sneakers squeak on the court, you can hear the ball bouncing and hitting the racket, you can hear the players grunt... Our seats were pretty far up but we could still hear every single thing happening. But, man, was it a long day. We watched tennis for eight hours straight.

The final match is this afternoon but I haven's decided who I'm rooting for yet. I like Novak because, even though he's competed in the US Open before (he lost to Federer in 2007), he only has one Grand Slam title and he's clearly the underdog of the match. Plus, he's supposed to be really funny and I like a person with a sense of humor. But I also like Nadal because, even though he's currently ranked number one and holds eight Grand Slam titles, he's never competed in or won the US Open before. If he wins today, he will have a Career Grand Slam.

For those of you who don't know, there are four major "Grand Slam" tennis tournaments every year:

  • Australian Open - Played on concrete
  • French Open - Played on clay
  • Wimbledon - Played on grass
  • US Open - Played on concrete

Winning any one of these gives you a Grand Slam title. If you win all four at least once during your career, you have a "Career Grand Slam." Federer has won 16 titles and has a Career Grand Slam. Nadal has won eight titles, but never the US Open, so he doesn't have a Career Grand Slam. Novak has won one title.

(Btw, I never thought I'd be giving a sports lesson of any kind on this blog.)

Anywho, 2010 has been a great year for me. First my movie gets made, then I get to go to the US Open... The fact that I'm lucky is not lost on me. I'm so grateful for everything.

Lindsay Lohan To Be Released From Jail

Actress will reportedly have to wear SCRAM bracelet again upon release.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Lindsay Lohan is expected to be a free woman once again after a second judge agreed with her lawyer that the actress is entitled to bail.

Since Lohan's jailing Friday (September 24), lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley was reportedly working to get her client the option of posting bail. The Los Angeles Times reports that on Friday afternoon, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Patricia M. Schnegg overturned Judge Elden Fox's order and granted the actress $300,000 bail. TMZ adds that Lohan will have to be outfitted with a SCRAM bracelet within 24 hours and avoid venues where alcohol is the "chief item of sale." Lohan sported a SCRAM bracelet this summer, which reportedly went off at a party, an incident that ultimately led to her July prison sentence.

Lohan was sent to prison exactly one week after she admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test, the screening being one of many conditions the starlet had to adhere to after back-to-back stints in jail and rehab. Judge Fox ordered Lohan to be held without bail until a scheduled October 22 hearing in the case. The move was reportedly a tactic to keep the actress in prison instead of sentencing her outright, which might have cleared the way for early release due to overcrowding.

"Ms. Lohan cannot be released early because this isn't a jail sentence," L.A. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore told People on Friday. "She's being held by court order until her hearing on October 22. She will be held in the same conditions as her last stay, in a keep-away unit."

Lohan has been frank about her struggles with addiction and recently tweeted about her willingness to face the repercussions of her actions after reports of her failed drug test surfaced.

"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result," Lohan tweeted last Friday. "Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps forward every day. I am testing every single day and doing what I must do to prevent any mishaps in the future. ... This was certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences."

In July, Lohan served 13 days of a 90-day jail sentence over a probation violation stemming from a 2007 DUI conviction. She followed up the jail time with 23 days court-ordered rehab, a fraction the court's original mandate of 90 days.

Jay-Z, Eminem Close Yankee Stadium Shows With Kanye West, Drake

Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent also make appearances at last of four Home and Home concerts.
By Jayson Rodriguez

Jay-Z performs at Yankee Stadium on Monday
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

NEW YORK — Like a good cleanup man in baseball, Jay-Z delivers big hits on a consistent basis.

On Tuesday night (September 14) at Yankee Stadium, the Brooklyn rapper closed out the fourth of his and Eminem's Home and Home shows (two in Detroit, two in the Bronx) with a performance that would make A-Rod envious.

"Break a record in this bitch, Hov," he rapped during a freestyle right after the opening number, the intro to his The Dynasty: Roc La Familia album. "Hit them with that BALCO."

The Roc Nation head, however, wouldn't need any performance-enhancing substances to give him an extra boost on this night. He confidently cruised through 90 minutes of material; Jay-Z was just as cool as the fall night.

Kanye West quickly arrived onstage two songs into the show for a mini-set of his own, riding shotgun with Hov on the "Power" remix and "Monster."

Jay-Z grabbed the crowd's attention again minutes later with an anecdote about his exit from the venue the night before. The legendary MC said on the way out after Monday's performance he ran into rap pioneer Kool Herc. Jay said he asked Herc to join him for Tuesday night's festivities, thanking Herc for creating hip-hop culture. "We wouldn't be here without you," he said.

"You ready for me to get out of here yet?" 'Ye asked Hov, bringing it back to the present.

"Not yet, we going all the way tonight," Jay-Z responded.

The Chicago star then burst into his "Good Life."

Next, Swizz Beatz joined Jay for "On to the Next One" before Eminem and the iconic lyricist traded verses on their collabo "Renegade." Eminem was agile onstage next to Jay-Z and appeared in arguably the best shape of his career.

"Go to war with the Mormons/ Take a bath with the Catholics," Em rapped. "In holy water/ No wonder they try to hold me under longer/ I'm a mother----in' spiteful, delightful, eyeful/ The new Ice Cube, mother----ers hate to like you."

Earlier in the evening, Eminem brought the capacity crowd to its feet by bringing out 50 Cent, who then brought out G-Unit's Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo with him. The trio from Queens sported glow-in-the-dark gear as the lights cut out during 50's performance of "I Get Money." Later, Fif ceded the stage to Em, and the Detroit superstar brought out Dr. Dre.

The hulking producer treated the crowd to "Still D.R.E." and "Nuthin' but a G Thang" sans Snoop Dogg; Eminem, though, filled in admirably for the Long Beach lyricist.

D-12 also took the stage during Em's set; the group dedicated their hit "My Band" to their fallen friend Proof.

The outfield was filled with fans, and their phones made the grounds look like a Lite-Brite as the screens lit up the stadium.

Jay-Z shouted out hip-hop's fallen heroes during his performance. He picked up Pimp C's "Big Pimpin' " verse a cappella and later ordered the DJ to play the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" and "One More Chance."

The show was smooth, but not without any hiccups. Drake delivered a stirring version of his "Light Up" with Jay-Z; the Toronto star sported a Blueprint 3-designed Yankees fitted cap to pay homage to Hov. "Welcome to the stage a man that's been getting busy as of late," Jay told the audience. "He goes by the name Drizzy Drake."

But minutes later, Drake stumbled through his and Nicki Minaj's "Up All Night." Hov offered a mulligan to Drake and later a olive branch when he told the crowd during his final song that he may have to offer the Young Money rapper a "free verse" to make up for messing up his sound.

Although Jay's most memorable performance involved his guest stars (Beyoncé also joined him, as did Nicki Minaj), this time it was a familiar face that helped him with the most moving part of the show. Memphis Bleek and Jay-Z ran through a series of the latter's past numbers as an encore.

"I got a million of these," Jay repeated twice, as he introduced songs ranging from "Jigga My N---a," "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "Where I'm From."

"For anyone that hasn't been down since Reasonable Doubt," Jay-Z told the crowd shortly after midnight, "you can head to the [exit]."

If you were at the Home and Home shows, share your reviews in the comments!

It was a great decision, because the intensely rich and picturesque surroundings kept us entertained the whole trip.

Justin Bieber Joined By Miley Cyrus, Usher At New York Show

Footage for his upcoming 3-D movie was shot at Madison Square Garden concert.

Right up until Justin Bieber took the stage at New York's Madison Square Garden, it was an almost typical stop on the My World Tour, complete with hype man and opening sets from Jessica Jarrell and Sean Kingston, who stepped up his game and brought out Iyaz.

But once Bieber, who was using his New York stop to film the concert footage for his 3-D movie, hit the stage, it was on, and the crowd's screams reached a deafening pitch. Dressed in his white and purple tour regalia, he kicked off the show with "Love Me," complete with karate-friendly dance moves. Any signs that Bieber had fallen ill only two days before weren't remotely evident. He turned his swag on for "Bigger" and for the cameras filming the show for his upcoming film.

"What's up, New York City? Welcome to my world. We are gonna have a lot of fun tonight. I got a lot of surprises in store for you guys!" he told the crowd before going straight into the fan favorite "U Smile," the next single he's expected to release. The catch: He was joined by Boyz II Men for the Motown-flavored track. "Boyz II Men sing it," he told the legendary R&B act before exchanging high fives. "These people are the ones who made me want to start singing." And then the group performed their tune "On Bended Knee," which they dedicated to Bieber's mom.

Bieber reclaimed the show with his song "Runaway Love," with no Kanye West or Raekwon in sight. "New York City, are you ready to have some fun? I'm filming good. We're shooting the movie," he told the crowd before getting into his heart cage and flying over the audience for "Never Let You Go" and "Favorite Girl," all while playing the guitar.

"You know, I guess I was right. There are a lot of people in here!" he proclaimed before bringing a girl onto the stage for "One Less Lonely Girl."

Bieber was then ready to bring out the big guns. Usher would be the next special guest of the night, setting the party off during Bieber's rendition of "Somebody to Love," giving the pop sensation a big hug before leaving the stage.

But Usher was only the first of the super superstars. Teen queen and 3-D movie vet Miley Cyrus then joined Bieber onstage as he slowed things down a bit for "Overboard." "I got to tell you something," Bieber said. "My motto to live by, there's gonna be times in your life when people tell you you can't do something. This is what I tell 'em: 'Never Say Never.' " And as rumored, Jaden Smith took the stage to rap his heart out to one very excited crowd during the track.

Left alone again, during "Up" Bieber flew over the stage in a cage and every girl went nuts. And after the crowd was reminded to make some noise, Bieber showed his fans how much he loves them by singing "One Time" followed by "That Should Be Me."

"It's gonna get crazy in here! You ready to get crazy?" he asked the crowd, which pretty much had been getting crazy all night. Then Sean Kingston hit the stage with Biebs for their collabo, "Eenie Meenie."

Soon the crowd was instructed to light up the room by waving their cell phones while Bieber sang "Down to Earth," during which he played a white baby-grand piano. Blowing kisses to the crowd, he departed the stage before his encore.

"I heard you screaming, so I thought I'd come back out here. I want to thank everyone. Madison Square Garden is a big deal for me ... and I'm really blessed," he said. "So I want to say thank you! Anyways, let's do another song!"

He closed out the night with his megahit "Baby" and was joined by Ludacris and lots of fireworks. The MSG show proved that when Bieber asks you to show up for his massively fun 3-D movie taping, you show up.

What was your favorite part of Justin's MSG concert? Tell us in the comments!

50 Cent Gives Up Twitter To Work On Album

50 Cent's Twitter followers are going to have to find other ways to amuse themselves this weekend. The MC says he's giving up tweeting to pen his next effort, The Return of the Heartless Monster.

"Ok ladies and [gentlemen] I'm writing my new album. I will not be on twitter again till Sept 6," Fif wrote Wednesday (September 1). "This album will be a classic," added the MC, who announced the album title on Twitter.

50 has been putting in work on his new material. Swizz Beatz recently told MTV News that he has been in the studio with the G-Unit boss, after 50 reportedly shelved much of the dance-music-friendly sound he originally envisioned for his upcoming music.

While the arrival of Kanye West and his multifaceted musings on the micro-blogging website has sparked major fanfare from fans and the media, 50's missives have ramped up in both frequency and ridiculousness over the past few weeks. Some days, Fif has been introspective and candid, sharing the inner-workings of his subconscious with followers.

"Just woke up I had a dream I put stars On my head like baby [of Cash Money]. then I was at church they told me take my hat off I said I just wanta pray lol," 50 typed Sunday. "That'$ crazy why wa$ baby on my mind. oh I wa$ looking at old xxl magazine$ la$t night. anyway$hout out to baby I know that [hurt]."

Other times, the Queens MC has added his voice to the public discourse about the state of the economy, and even doled out advice to our increasingly embattled president.

"Obamas ratings are down cause he didn't include pimpin and hoein in stimulus package. Good hoes would boost male moral and fix the recession," 50 asserted Saturday. The "Baby by Me" rapper later added, "Sh-- I should run america. first thing I'd do is cut my taxes then tell yal chill the f--- out ima get to the rest of the problems. You know me and george bush was born on the same day july6. Speaking of birthdays everybody on twitter should send me just 1 dollar cool?"

The Before I Self Destruct rapper has even mused about his tough childhood. "My aunt sylvia didnt like me growin up cause she was the baby till I came," 50 also wrote Saturday. "We had roaches so she put roach spray in a bowl and kill my dog."

Of course, it wouldn't be 50's Twitter page if he didn't take a swipe at the competition. "I just looked at kanye page what the f--- kind a spaced out tweets are those," the MC typed earlier in the day. "F--- that I aint never looking at that sh-- again."

Although 50 has built an empire on his super-tough persona, the MC has conceded that his words may be a wee bit harsh for his Twitter fans. "Look man I'm sorry I've been cursing," 50 said. "But f--- that sh-- I gotta express myself, bitch."

Britney Spears' Ex-Bodyguard Must Prove Ongoing Harassment, Expert Says

Attorney Michael Bononi explains that the burden is on Fernando Flores to prove his hostile work environment.

After mounting a successful comeback and maintaining a relatively low profile in the press for the past year, Britney Spears is now dealing with another bout of disturbing claims regarding her personal life.

On Wednesday, Spears' former bodyguard, Fernando Flores, filed a sexual harassment lawsuit alleging that the singer made multiple unwelcome passes at him, exposed herself on numerous occasions and engaged in sex in front of her two young sons. A post on Spears' site denied the allegations.

The accusations are harsh, however, according to a legal expert, it's up to Flores to provide the evidence.

"What he's gonna have to show in making these allegations is that he was subjected to a hostile work environment, and it's gonna have to be hostile in two ways: one, that a reasonable person similarly situated would have been offended by the conduct and secondly that he was actually offended by the conduct," Michael Bononi, a partner at Bononi Law Group in Los Angeles, told MTV News.

Bononi, who has worked for castmembers of "Desperate Housewives," is not involved in Spears' case, though has represented both sides in sexual harassment cases. He said juries typically look for material evidence, in the form of official complaints or concerns voiced to friends, that indicates wrongdoing on the defendant's part.

"What courts and what juries look [for] is: Did he act consistently with the way you would expect someone to act who was actually offended by this type of conduct? In other words, did he make complaints? Did he tell her to stop? Did he talk to his friends and colleagues?" Bononi said. "Is there corroboration that at the time this was happening it was actually bothering him, and are people going to come forward and be able to testify that at the time this stuff was transpiring, he was talking to them about it, talking about how offended if, at all, he was?"

The suit states that Flores reported an incident in which Spears called him up to her room "for no other purpose or reason than to expose her naked or near naked body to Plaintiff." According to the suit, Flores' supervisor, Josh McMahan, shrugged off the incident, saying, "You know you liked it." Flores also apparently voiced his issues several times, but "his complaints were ignored or mocked, and no action was taken to rectify the situation."

Bononi described California's sexual harassment laws as "employee-friendly," noting that there is no cap on punitive damages. However, the onus is still on Flores to demonstrate the extent to which his experience with Spears affected him.

"That's the big hurdle that he's gonna have to get over: How offensive was this to him?" he said. "From what I've read ... if it's that she's walked around him nude a few times and similar things, I haven't read anything where she's demanding sex or anything along those lines."

Bononi also noted that as member of a superstar's security detail, Flores was likely prepped for challenging and intense situations. "As far as the salacious nature of these allegations, he's a bodyguard ... how offended was he if the conduct that he's talking about is truthful. How injured is he? It's hard to believe that he's scarred from seeing her in her room a few times."

Bononi mentioned that Spears' celebrity may work against her if she has actually crossed any boundaries. The high-profile nature of the case would likely spur others to come forward if the singer has a history of inappropriate behavior with her employees.

"The celebrity status, where it can really have an impact on these cases, is if she has engaged in similar sort of conduct with other people in the past, this provides ... an avenue for them to come forward and say, 'Look what happened to me,' " Bononi said. "The celebrity status really does encourage people to come forward that have seen some of this or have experienced similar sort of stuff in the past from Britney if she has in fact done it."

While Spears' past troubles may inform public opinion, Bononi said her previous personal issues or the fact that she makes a living touring the world, touting an ultra-sexy image, shouldn't factor into the sexual harassment case.

"There's nothing in her past that I'm aware of that has anything to do with sexual harassment of employees," Bononi said. "It should not be held against her. It makes her an easy target for these types of allegations."

T.I. Is 'Gonna Be Fine,' Pharrell Says

'He lives a lot of his life on television — you're bound to make a mistake,' Tip's King Uncaged producer says.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Back when T.I. was still a fledging MC crafting his 2001 Arista Records debut, I'm Serious, he teamed up with superproducer Pharrell Williams, of the hitmaking production outfit the Neptunes, for the album's title track. Six albums, a label move and nearly a decade later, T.I. has become a hit factory unto himself, but he has also extended his already robust rap sheet.

He hooked up with Pharrell once again for his forthcoming album, King Uncaged, but his recent legal issues have steered the focus away from his hard-hitting music. When MTV News caught up with Pharrell, the producer who worked with Tip on his first mainstream offering and "talks to him every day," he insisted the ATL king can still rule the game.

"He got the heart of a champion," Pharrell told MTV News on Thursday (September 23). "Whatever happens, Tip gonna be fine, regardless. He got a good heart, and at the end of the day, he's a human being."

The producer cautioned fans against rushing to judgment, saying, "Let he who's perfect cast the first stone."

"He lives a lot of his life on television — you're bound to make a mistake," Pharrell continued, referencing T.I.'s recent arrest on drug possession charges. "If that's what happened. We don't know what's going on right now. All we know is the fingers are being pointed, and I'mma stand by his side 'cause he's a good guy."

Pharrell pointed to Tip's work with young people as one of the MC's redeeming qualities.

"What you can't do is take away any of the good stuff that he's done for this world and done for the kids and his community," he said. "Sorry, you can't take that away. It's already done."

Tip's legacy of chart-topping club bangers and fiery lyricism can't be denied either, and it appears that he refuses to slack off in the hits department, as Pharrell enthused, "the [new] album is crazy."

The producer also spoke candidly about the delicate balance an artist like T.I. has to maintain in order to keep the fans happy, stack sales and maintain his artistic integrity.

"He's got songs out there right now that are singles, but, you know, there are pressures in the world, certain things you can't necessarily control. But his body of work ... he's got a crazy album," Pharrell said. "I saw, like, 60 records, and almost every record that he played me was really incredible. Then there was the more poppier side of things, where the label kinda puts the gun to your head 'cause they gotta pay their bills."

Although T.I. may have to relent to certain label demands with some radio-friendly jams, Pharrell said Uncaged will unleash the energy of their early collaborations together.

"Please trust, T.I.'s album is incredible, and he's an amazing talent, and it's been a while since we got together," he said, adding that in addition to his work on I'm Serious, he also hooked up with Tip for the track "Freak Though," from 2004's Urban Legend. "It's been a minute since then, and we really went in for old times' sake, so, it's pretty crazy."

James McAvoy Says 'The Conspirator' Has Modern-Day Relevance

Parallels between 19th-century drama and recent U.S. politics exist because the film was 'true to itself,' says McAvoy.

Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. The film focuses on the fallout from the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, but the political intrigue within could be seen as relevant to the current moment.

In the film, fresh-faced lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) is charged with defending the assassination conspiracy's lone female defendant, Mary Surratt (Robin Wright); over the course of the trial, Aiken becomes increasingly convinced of Surratt's innocence. Eventually, he realizes that the imprisoned woman could be serving as bait to draw out one of the conspiracy's other central figures.

Given the tenuous political climate — not to mention the political bent of Redford's other movies, like "Lions for Lambs" — it's easy to spot the similarities between the politics of "The Conspirator" and those of the past decade. But according to McAvoy, these parallels aren't intentional.

"I think when they wrote the script, they literally just wrote the script off what happened [during the trial]," the actor told MTV News. "A lot of the dialogue was lifted from speeches that were given — my closing speech, for example, and what I say in defense of Mary Surratt [were] just lifted from what [my character actually] said.

"At the end of that, we were left with a script that was incredibly resonant and relevant and kind of walked a very clear, parallel line with stuff that's been happening [in modern times], but that was only because it was true to itself; it wasn't designed to do that," he continued.

McAvoy noted that Redford's directorial ability resulted in a subtle presentation of the parallels between the politics of the mid-19th century and those of the early 21st.

"I don't think Robert felt that we shouldn't tell the story because it's resonant and relevant," he said. "What he did say is that we shouldn't be trying to look for the parallels and highlighting them, because it will be abundantly clear to the audience if they want to see them. And if they don't want to see them, they'll just get the story of something incredibly important that happened in their country anyway."

Justin Bieber's Triple-Threat VMA Performance: Making The Show

Best New Artist winner was incredibly hands-on, weighing in on his dancers, drum kit and leather lettermen jackets before the big show.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber rehearses for the 2010 VMAs

Before Justin Bieber even hit the stage for rehearsal at L.A. Live on the Friday before the VMAs, you could feel the energy in the air. And once the teen pop star actually began rehearsing, it became clear Bieber's Video Music Awards performance would be influenced by the "A Hard Day's Night"-inspired VMA promo he shot.

Bieber first did a rough run-through of a medley of his hits "U Smile," "Baby" and "Somebody to Love." Then he stepped out of a chauffeured red-and-white '57 Chevy, followed by a gaggle of female fans — an obvious reference to the Beatles. When Justin took to the stage, he wanted to make sure he got everything right: from the way his drum kit sounded to the way his dancers hit their marks to the look of his leather jackets for the show.

With the girls surrounding the stage as they watched Bieber rehearse, the driven, hard-working teen proved he would be hands-on and involved in every detail. What was perhaps most surprising was that his outdoor rehearsal went virtually unnoticed by anyone other than those involved with the practice session.

While Bieber seemed to be nailing an engaging first VMA performance, Kim Kardashian could be heard teasing about their "romance" in a hilarious voiceover.

As the hour-and-a-half-long rehearsal progressed, fans did eventually turn up — one even shouted to Bieber, "Follow me on Twitter!" — but the scene around the barricaded stage area remained relatively chill. Justin made sure to remind fans of one thing: "What's up, everybody? I love you!"

The rehearsal ended with Bieber at the drums, closing out "Somebody to Love," with black and red confetti falling from the sky. It remained entangled in the trees right through Sunday, when yet more confetti came down on the Best New Artist winner.

The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there's plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
